Lens implant surgery is a term used to describe procedures that involve operating within the eye (intra-ocular) rather than on the surface, to either place an artificial implant to correct vision or replace the existing lens of the eye and adjust the prescription at the same time. IOL's are a permanent vision correction solution and will prevent you from ever developing cataracts as you age.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) or Surface Treatment (PRK/EK) is a vision correction procedure in which the vision correction treatment is applied to the surface of the cornea. PRK is the procedure of choice for patients whose corneas are too thin to have LASIK.

LASIK is the most frequently performed laser procedure in the world. Your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon prepares your eye for laser treatment by creating a small flap on the surface of the cornea (front surface of the eye) by using blade-free IntraLase technology. The laser is then applied to the underlying surface to reshape your cornea and correct for your prescription. Your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon then places the flap back down and your eye begins to heal. The key benefits of the LASIK procedure are a rapid recovery time, usually within 48 hours and little or no post operative discomfort.

You cannot have surgery while pregnant and should wait for 6 months after stopping breastfeeding before proceeding with surgery.

If you have diabetes, once it is well controlled with a stable hba1c level and you have a letter form your GP, you are suitable for a surgery.

Those with Glaucoma cannot have Laser Eye Surgery. You may however, be suitable for a Lens Replacement Surgery which can be determined at consultation.

If you are on this medication, you must stop taking it 6 months prior to Laser Eye Surgery or 4 weeks prior to IOL surgery.

If you have epilepsy, once it is not light triggered and you are seizure free for 2 years you are suitable for a surgery.

Yes, long term follow up studies indicate that after the healing process is complete, eyesight remains stable. Some patients may develop the need for reading glasses as they age but this happens to most adults regardless of whether they get laser vision correction.

For most of our patients, it takes one or two days for their improved vision to settle. However, we do advise that patients rest their eyes properly for the month following their surgery.

We strongly advise our patients to attend all of their aftercare appointments. Your aftercare appointments allow us to track the progress of your eyes and to ensure they are healing properly.

At Optilase, we are proud to offer a Laser Lifetime Care Guarantee to all of our patients. In the unlikely event that your eyesight should regress (your old prescription starts to return), we offer the corrective laser treatment, known as an enhancement, for free. This comes as standard with all of our Laser Eye Surgery treatments. If the vision deterioration occurs due to the natural aging of the eye, you would not be suitable for a correction.

After PRK, some pain is normal and this can happen on day 2/3 or day 4/5. Please use painkillers, drops and get as much sleep as you can in a dark room. You can call the clinic at any time if you are concerned.

If you have hurt your eye(s) within 1 month of surgery please get in touch with the clinic as soon as possible.

You should not be in any considerable pain after your Laser Eye Surgery or IOL surgery though some discomfort is normal. If you find that you are in pain, you can contact our team.

If you feel your vision is worsening, we would request that you get a sight test done and pass results to our clinic. Our Optometrist can then book you in for a review.

You can wear eye make up 2 weeks after your surgery. This is best practice to avoid infection.

Please check if you can see the lense in your eye, and then call the clinic immediately. If it has been less than 7 day since your surgery and it is after hours, you may use the emergency phone number provided.

You will be very light sensitive and it may be difficult to fully open your eyes, so it is not safe to travel alone the day of your surgery.

Please start using your drops on the day of surgery. Begin using your drops 3 hours after IOL.

It is recommened that you wait for 1 week after your surgery before flying.

If you are having treatment in the North, your preop is done ahead of surgery, and you will be allowed to drive after this appointment. If you are being treated in the Republic of Ireland, your Laser Eye Surgery preop is done on the day of surgery, in which case you will be unable to drive.

No, there is no permanent change in the appearance of your eyes. The day after LASIK surgery your eyes should be white and clear. The healing process can take 4-5 days with LASEK and during this time the eye may appear slightly red.

Yes, you can eat eat drink before your surgery but we would request that you avoid caffeine.

No, you will not be put to sleep during surgery as you will need to be able to follow instructions during the procedure.

Don't panic! You will have no pain during surgery as you will have anaesthetic drops placed in the eyes, which will completely numb your eyes.

Yes, please do not panic. Dilation can last longer in some people. We recommened that you drink plenty of fluids. Walking or light excercise will also help to metabolise it out of your system quicker.

Med1 forms no longer exist. You need to fill in your details of payment on your online revenue account which is a very quick and straightforward process.

If you are on medication, we would request that you get details of the name, start date and dosage of each medication and provide this to the clinic.

Due to advancements in Eye Surgery, it is perfectly safe to treat both eyes on the same day. In total, it takes approximately 10-15 minutes to have both eyes treated. If for any reason you would prefer to have your eyes treated separately, we can arrange this for you at no extra charge.

There are a number of factors that may make you unsuitable for Laser Eye Surgery. These include prescriptions stronger than -10 or +5. Having a squint or a lazy eye can also rule you out (Note that laser vision correction can be carried out on some patients with a lazy eye, depending on its severity). For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is necessary to wait until 6 months after finishing. You also need to be over the age of 18.

Your journey with Optilase begins when you attend your initial assessment. One of our Laser Optometrists will meet with you and spend the next hour thoroughly examining and testing your eyes. You will find out if you are a suitable candidate for laser vision correction, what treatment will be best for your eyes, and how much exactly it will cost. You will not be able to drive after your assessment for at least 6-8 hours.

During your surgery, you will be in theatre for around 20 minutes, though the actual treamtent is much quicker than this. We usually allow roughly 2 hours for repeat scans or preoperative consultation, but you will not be in the clinic for the whole day.

You will have a pre-operative consultation with your Surgeon a minumum of 7 days before surgery in order to have any questions answered and your lense type confirmed by the Surgeon.

We need to determine the level of your squint. We do so by covering the stronger eye and we will then determine if you can see with the weaker eye. If you can't manage then you are more likely an unsuitable candidate for a surgery.

We request that you do not wear your contact lenses for 5 days prior to your consultation.

Yes, we require an eye test within the last 2 years before your consultation. This is to check if your prescription is stable.

Meeting with your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon allows him the proper time to review your assessment file and determine the specific treatment most suitable for your eyes. This is laid down in the guidelines from the Royal College of Ophthalmology in the UK, which Optilase voluntarily adheres to. It also allows you to ask any more detailed questions regarding your treatment and your surgeon will give final approval for your laser treatment.
